What is IEC 60317?
IEC 60317 is the international specification series for particular types of winding wire. Each part covers one insulation system and thermal class — IEC 60317-3 for 155-class polyester enameled copper wire, IEC 60317-13 for 200-class, IEC 60317-46 for 240-class polyimide, and so on. Quoting the part number is the most precise way to specify enameled wire across regions.
How do NEMA MW types map to IEC 60317?
ANSI/NEMA MW 1000 is the North American magnet wire standard, and its appendix cross-references MW type numbers to the equivalent IEC 60317 parts. IEC 60317-57, for example, corresponds to MW 81-C. The table above lists the cross-reference for each grade Jingda produces. The -C suffix denotes a copper conductor and -A an aluminum conductor.
What is the difference between round and solderable enameled wire?
Solderable grades (JIS type UEW, NEMA MW-79 and MW-82) use a polyurethane-based enamel that decomposes at soldering temperature, so terminations can be tinned without mechanically stripping the coating. Non-solderable polyester, polyesterimide and polyimide grades reach higher thermal classes but require the enamel to be removed before termination.
